Mom's Snickerdoodles Recipe (2024)

Mom's Snickerdoodles are no joke. They have no cream of tartar, so if you don't have any on hand, don't stress, it's not needed in this recipe. These are so simple and so chewy. You will love them.

Mom's Snickerdoodles Recipe (1)

I loved coming home from school as a child on a rainy day. We knew there would be warm cookieswaiting for us.

These are one of our mom’s favorite cookies and she got the recipe from our Grandma Char. These snickerdoodles are soft and chewy and don’t call for any cream of tartar.

So you are pretty much guaranteed to have these ingredients in your pantry. You are going to love how simple they are, and how quickly they come together.

They are honestly so moist and chewy (and I am not a fan of the “m” word, but they really are). These will quickly become a family favorite in your house, I am sure of it.

Do These Cookies Freeze Well?

These cookies do freeze well. We recommend placing them in an airtight container, or a ziploc bag with the air sucked out, to keep them as fresh as possible.

To thaw, we recommend letting them sit out on the counter for about 5-8 hours. You could microwave them, but it could dry them out a little.

However, for best results, let them thaw at room temperature for a few hours, or over night.

What Is A Substitute For Shortening?

Shortening can be a bit of a tricky ingredient to replace, especially for this recipe, however, it can be done.

You could easily use butter or margarine to replace the shortening. They are also ingredients that replace shortening straight across (meaning you don’t need more or less, you can use the exact same measurements of the butter or margarine as you would with the shortening).

However, we have made this recipe with both butter and shortening, and the cookies with shortening always turn out a little bit better.

You will also want to make sure your butter or margarine is softened to room temperature (not melted) for best results.

When I make snickerdoodles I skip the chilling part, drop by rounded teaspoon and sprinkle with cinnamon/sugar. Even though they're not perfectly round, it's faster, less messy, and they taste just the same.

  5. Little Magnolia Kitchen says:

I love love love Snickerdoodles...probably my favorite cookie! I pinned this recipe on Pinterest and I cannot wait to make them!

  6. Dana says:

I wondered about the cream of tartar, too.

  7. Six Sisters says:

    Hi Ashley!

Butter would work fine instead of margarine. And no cream of tartar! :)

  8. Six Sisters says:

    Hi Dana,

No cream of tartar! It is one of the only snickerdoole recipes I have seen that doesn't use it, but they are delicious!

We just moved and I made this as a snack to eat while we were unpacking and my family loved them. My mom is begging me to send her the recipe. :) I'm making them again this week... They are that good!

  13. Mandy Pope says:

Is there any substitute for the shortening?

  14. Six Sisters says:

Margarine is a substitute for shortening. You could use that.

  15. Regina says:

I'm sorry, but they just aren't true Snickerdoodles without the cream of tartar. It's what gives the cookies it's zing. I guess I don't understand why everyone doesn't like to add it.

  16. Yolanda says:

I'm glad to have come across this recipe on Pinterest. I made them using butter instead of margarine, added a little vanilla and they were wonderful. I'm one that just does not have cream of tartar readily available in my pantry, so this recipe was perfect.

  17. Darcy says:

Thanks for this recipe. I followed the directions exactly but my cookies were very small. So I tried to roll bigger balls but they never expanded wider just fluffier. Any suggestions?
