Update: This recipe was originally published in 2019 and has been republished with all new photos.

I’m a Mississippi girl (currently residing in Alabama) and in Mississippi we put this special sauce on all the things. If you’re new to comeback sauce I’ll give you a quick lesson on it. It originated in a greek restaurant in Jackson, Mississippi. It quickly grew in popularity and these days it’s a house dressing in so many Mississippi establishments. I was genuinely surprised when I moved and discovered it wasn’t served everywhere else. It really should be so let me teach you how to make your own.

Comeback sauce is sometimes compared to other creamy sauces like Louisiana remoulade sauce and thousand island dressing but it’s quite different. Remoulade sauce has a heavy french and creole influence. It’s usually made with horseradish and dry mustard so it tends to be a bit tangier. Thousand island dressing is made with onion and pickles, plus it doesn’t include hot sauce. While both are also yummy, comeback sauce is truly its own special sauce.

This southern-style sauce has a totally unique flavor. It’s not spicy but you’ll notice a hint of the taste of hot sauce. It. Is. So. Dang. Good. The best part is the ingredient list is simple and short. No cooking involved! Just stir and this tasty sauce is ready to enjoy!

This versatile sauce is commonly known as the perfect condiment for finger food like fried chicken and fries but there’s so much more you can do with it. It can also be paired with steak or seafood. It’s delicious drizzled over roasted veggies or scrambled eggs too.

Mississippi Comeback Sauce Ingredients

  • Mayonnaise: Use regular mayo or light mayo. It makes the sauce perfectly creamy.
  • Ketchup: Any store-bought ketchup will work. Choose your favorite.
  • Lemon juice: A little bit of lemon juice balances out the strong flavor of Tabasco and spices.
  • Tabasco: Tabasco is the hot sauce I recommend here. We’re not using enough to make this spicy, but you will notice a hint of the flavor.
  • Seasonings: Paprika, garlic powder, ground mustard, and salt are the only seasonings you need in this easy sauce recipe.

How to Make Mississippi Comeback Sauce

To make this savory sauce, simply combine the ingredients in a small bowl and stir until you have a smooth sauce. You’re only a couple of minutes away from the very best classic southern comeback sauce. It doesn’t get much easier than that!

Taste and add more Tabasco if desired. (I stick to the original recipe and don’t make any adjustments when I prepare this.)

Is this sauce vegan?

Yes, just be sure to use a vegan mayo.

Is this a spicy sauce?

The level of heat depends on how much hot sauce you use. This isn’t a spicy sauce if you use the measurements listed in the recipe card but you will taste the Tabasco. To increase the heat, increase the amount of Tabasco you include. More Tabasco equals more spicy flavor.

Doing a round of Whole30? There are plenty of Whole30 compliant mayo and ketchup options that will work beautifully here. I’ll link to a few options but you’ll likely find more if you do a little quick research and read ingredient lists.
